Channel your inner simpleton
Channel your inner simpletonOver the past couple weeks, I've found myself trying hard to keep things in my life complicated. It's what I'm familiar with. My career had been all about creating solutions to complex problems. Most of the time, the solutions were complex, too. That's just how it was for the past decade or so. I got comfortable with complexity. Anyone else in the technology or cybersecurity space will say the same thing. But now that I'm free to build my own thing, complexity is not longer required. In fact, it's necessary to remove complexity. Implementing simple solutions that don't require a lot of attention or upkeep is what I need right now. But it's hard to switch the mindset back to simplicity when you've been working with complicated abstractions for so long. I'm happy to say I've been able to take steps in the right direction, but it was not without some pain and anguish. We'll use my website for example. I've been trying to put together a "simple" WordPress site for my coaching and newsletters so I can start helping more people again. But that was not going so well...
There were some good suggestions in here. Ultimately I decided to move everything into ConvertKit. I'm not done yet, but so far it seems rather simple to have everything in there for me. And it's really quite simple if you just spend a few minutes understanding how to build what you want. This exercise was a huge wakeup call for me. It was the moment that made my new reality really sink in. The reality is that the world I used to know, the one I became an industry expert in, was gone. The world I had been wanting my entire life is finally there for the taking and brain is struggling with it. It just doesn't know how to operate without thinking of 10 thousand ways to solve the most basic problems. We're getting there, but progress is a little slow. Simplicity isn't as easy as it sounds. But it's exactly what I wanted. And now I need to rewire my brain so that it can function in this new reality.
The first thing I'm gonna do to start this transition to simpleton, is to always look for the easy way out first. I know that sounds stupid, and maybe it is, but the easy way out is typically the simplest as well. So that will be my starting point. If it's easy and solves the problem, that's what we're gonna go with. No more building comprehensive solutions to problems that don't need it. It's time to channel the inner simpleton. -John P.S. Next week, we'll probably dive into how to use the principles of Quantum Entanglement to help us better understand how to say "no." *If you know anyone that might find these newsletters useful, please forward this to them and sign up at thesundayupgrade.com Need help channeling your inner simpleton?
