Build your "get sh*t done" morning routine
Your GSD morningHaving a productive day where you get the most important shit done, starts in the morning. And not just because you woke up and can function a little bit. It's the habits and routine that you build to create an environment that allows you to focus on getting the important shit done right away without distractions. When I lived in the Arizona desert, I had developed a rock solid morning routine that allowed me to focus on getting the important work done right away. It was almost automatic. Get up between 4-5am, drink a giant glass of water, take care of general bodily functions, then take a nice long walk in the dark with my desert dwelling wildlife. The coyotes would come and say hi, never aggressive, the owls would stare at me like I'm some kind of Martian, and everything else was either sleeping or running for it's life. It was so quiet and the weather was perfect every single morning. After my walk I'd have some coffee and get to work on the most important things that day. It was so simple to just get shit done. Now that I live in Minnesota, things have changed dramatically. My morning routine went to complete shit and I haven't been able to make the adjustment all that well. Out here, the coyotes are bit desperate and aggressive. They look like mangy dogs with rabies. I'll have no part of that.. The Trash Pandas aren't as cute and cuddly up here as you might think. They run in packs and will growl at you when you get too close. Those things are just mean out here. The foxes also run in packs and those things make noises I've never heard before. It's a combination of a dying rooster and a whining baby. That's the best I can describe it... It's fuckin' weird. So there goes my peaceful pre-dawn walks... Everything else went to shit once my morning walk routine was broken. I didn't realize how bad it was until earlier this week. I was pacing around trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing and a million things kept spiraling through my mind. It was total chaos in there. It got so bad, I ended up not doing anything and just doom scrolled for like an hour. I'm sure of you've had days like that when your brain just loses it's shit and tries to solve the world's problems all at once in a single morning. Or maybe that's just me... Anyways, let's talk about that GSD morning we all need... Having a solid and stable morning routine is the one thing that can make or break your ability to get the important shit done each day. Everyone that says words out on the interwebs has their own thoughts on morning routines and how they are the key to being successful. You'll typically get a list that includes some of these:
Then once they've got their 4 hour routine done, they go to lunch before sitting down to do a couple hours of "deep work" and then they call it a day. Every one of you knows someone out there like that. The funny thing is, it works for them. They get the important shit done because they found the routine that works for them. So we need to do the same. Here's what my GSD morning looks like:
Some days I drop in a quick meditation, but not every day. I get plenty of Zen on my walks. I get to start my day calm and in control. Not anxious and overstimulated. Another key for me is not looking at my phone or any social media right away in the morning. That shit will ruin any chance at having a highly productive day. If the first thing you do is check your phone, your day is gonna probably gonna be an anxiety filled shit show. Good luck. Don't know where to start? Try this:
It doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to work. What does your GSD morning look like? -John Need help building your GSD morning? Book a quick chat using the link below and I'll help you out.
